In today’s episode, we are going to look at how you can increase your email opening rates by preventing your emails from going to spam. It’s the easiest way of improving your opening rates simply by making sure that more people get to see your emails! Just because you sent your emails doesn’t mean that your recipients actually will see them. A lot of email providers will send your emails to spam, and today we focus on how we can prevent that as much as possible. Whenever you are sending emails from [email protected] to other people, you’re so-called senders reputation gets into play. It’s a very important thing and it basically means, that providers keep track of how much spam comes from your email address and from the server’s IP address that you’re sending those emails from.
So even if you’re not sending any actual spam at all, if you’re using one of the free or cheaper email marketing software, like let’s say one of the cheaper MailChimp plans or AWeber and so on, you are not having a dedicated IP address. It means your emails and the emails of other users are sent by the same servers. Meaning if other users are sending a lot of spam that harms the sender’s reputation and may also cause your emails going to spam. Now, there’s not much you can do about that. However, MailChimp and Co. are aware of that and they are doing whatever they can to prevent that from happening. And although they are really doing a good job at preventing users or their users from sending any spam at all, they simply cannot prevent it all together. It’s quite easy, if I want to send spam with MailChimp or any other of the providers, I just create a new account to upload my email list.
I sent a spam email to my huge spam list and only after I actually sent that spam email, MailChimp will be able to notice that the email probably was spam based on high bounce rates and so on, and only then will they close my account. But the damage is already done. Now the only solution to prevent that from ever happening is simply to use a provider and a plan that provides you with a dedicated IP address, which means, you have your own IP address and only you are sending emails with that IP address, and therefore your sender’s reputation will be only influenced by the emails that you are sending. Another part that’s really important as briefly mentioned before, is the so-called bounce rate. How many emails are you sending to mailboxes that actually don’t exist anymore? So therefore the message is bounced back because there is no recipient. It’s similar, if you send a letter to someone who moved and then the letter comes back and telling you, okay, the person is not living there anymore, like recipient unknown. And if you have a lot of those fake or false email addresses in your email list, providers simply assume, that it’s likely that you did not get those email addresses legitimately, but that you’re more likely bought that email list and therefore they will assume that you are actually sending spam.
You are sending emails that people didn’t opt in to, and your sender’s reputation will suffer. More of your emails will go to the spam folder. Thankfully, there’s an easy solution for that. There are services out there like for example, NeverBounce, that you can easily integrate on your websites or funnels that will validate every email before the user actually opts in or when the user actually opts in. This will ensure that people cannot opt in with fake email addresses or even opt in with emails where they have a typo in the email address because when they click that submit button, NeverBounce will validate that email address for you and the user will only be able to actually submit the form and end up on your list when the email address is valid.
In my opinion, that’s something everybody should do. Why? Because with most email providers, you will pay depending on the number of emails that you sent, and it does not matter if the email bounces or not. So it’s in your interest, not only in terms of the sender’s reputation, but also in terms of the amount of money you pay every month to make sure that only valid email addresses end up on your list and NeverBounce has a lot of different options there. A pay-as-you-go approach where you basically just pay a fraction of a cent for each validation, which in the end, again, will improve your sender’s reputation.
Therefore, making sure more emails end up in the inbox and not in the spam folder, and therefore automatically increase your opening rates. Now, outside of those technical aspects like senders reputation and bounce rate, it’s also important to take care of having the right copy within your emails so that your subject line and your copy itself do not contain known trigger words. You can use services like subjectline.com and GlockApps for that purpose. The first one, subjectline.com simply allows you to paste your subject line and it will then tell you if it has any known trigger keywords that would qualify your email as spam and therefore will already help you reduce the amount or number or percentage of emails that ends up in user spam folders. GlockApps goes even beyond that and provides you with a dedicated email list. So before you actually schedule or send an email, you first sent that same email to that GlockApps email list and GlockApps backend will then show you if the email would show up in the inbox or in the spam folder or anywhere else at Yahoo, at Google and so on.
Based on those mailboxes they provided you with. And that’s the most accurate way out there. It also comes with a price tag, but in the end, higher opening rates also mean higher click rates. Higher click rates mean higher conversion rates and higher conversion rates mean more revenue for you. So it’s something that at some point in your journey, you should start investing too. So if you’re just starting out, I recommend that you at least sign up with NeverBounce. They have a pay-as-you-go approach, so you only pay for the validations that take place. And this way you ensure that your email list while you’re building it actually only consists of valid email addresses. Which will help your sender’s reputation and will already be a big step in the right direction. Secondly, make sure that you use subjectline.com before you schedule or send an email to at least make sure you’re subject line doesn’t contain known spam trigger keywords.
And increase, therefore, the delivery rate and the opening rate, and with that, the click rate and with the click rate, also your conversion rate and therefore your revenue. The next step would be to use a SMTP provider or an email autoresponder that allows you to use a dedicated IP address. So your sender’s reputation is yours alone and not influenced by others using that platform. And the last service in that whole chain would then be to start using GlockApps to send your emails once to that GlockApps list to make sure that they actually end up, or the highest percentage possible ends up in the inbox of users. Again, more people seeing your email in the inbox equals more people actually opening the email equals more clicks equals more traffic, more traffic equals more conversions, more conversions equal more revenue. And therefore, while you may look at some of those services as an additional expense, it actually is an investment in your business.
And there is a certain point, depending on the size of your email list where those services will actually bring you more money than they cost you every month simply because more emails will get delivered.
